I'll echo the sentiments of Jack and J. Olivier, and say do Prince Valiant if it is what YOU want to do. As for me, I would be ecstatic if you took over from John Cullen Murphy when he chooses to retire. Much like yourself, I am a big fan of the Hal Foster days of the strip. It deserves a top-notch artist like yourself to fill in those very big shoes. I have Rick Norwood's PV: An American Epic reprint volumes and find it to be a crying shame that the strip as it stands today is nowhere near the size it was back in the 30s and 40s. It would be interesting to see what today's artists could do with a full-page spread. Bill Watterson especially has stated the smallish size does a disservice to the comic strip and I agree wholeheartedly. And I can't think of a better artist to do Val justice. : )

Hi, I think you should do Prince Valiant, and more specifically, YOUR Prince Valiant. As long as you have a great story that you want to tell and that allow your work to really shine through, go ahead ! Do it, but fist of all, enjoy yourself and I believe the rest will follow. Take Care

Prince Valiant hmmmmm. When I ask myself, what work of yours do I love the best, It's your stories that I love the most. Especially the ones from "Ballads and Sagas". It seems to me that these stories really moved you and to me made your art sing. I would say yes do Prince Valiant but only if the stories move you. It's a chance to give yourself some great exposure, but is it something that will bring you satisfaction. Are there other dreams and accomplishments that mean more to you that would be pushed back by doing Prince Valiant? Questions to ask yourself. Whatever you do I know I'll love it. Glad your feeling better. Peace Jack

HELLO FOLKS, CHARLES HERE! I'm recovering from a amazing bout of the flu. 3 days flat on my back and more daze than that to achieve full recovery. But I'm back up to speed and working steadily on "ROSE," so never fear. It won't be late!!! Also I received an interesting call last week from Jay Kennedy of King Features Syndicate. He asked "would I be interested in drawing the "PRINCE VALIANT" Sunday comic strip?" 52 pages a year of Medieval adventure. Hal Foster, the strips creator has always been an art hero of mine so the offer is exceedingly flattering. What do you think? Would you like to look in your Sunday paper and see my work? Write me your thoughts... KERRY: If you can get a hold of the beautiful book: GREEN MAN by William Anderson and published be Harper Collins in the States it would help your costume concepts considerably. The book is filled with oodles of photos, among them a great shot of a May Day celebration in England with people dressed in Green Man finery. Check it out, you wont be disappointed. KIKI: I guess you'll just have to get off your lazy butt and print out the order form, there is no other way to acquire Green Man merchandise. BILL: Good to hear from you and I'm delighted that you're still enjoying your purchase. The "reading" piece is still one of my favorite pieces of art that I've done in recent years. There is a signed and numbered print of the image available through the merchandise (under "prints") page of this website for those of you (unlike Bill) who will not be able to have the original hanging in your living room. ERIC: Who is Theresa Edgerton and what has she written, I'm curious? As to Harry Potter, I've only read the first half of the first book (thanks Maria!) and enjoyed it quite a bit. Sparkling prose, vivid characters and a nice turn of plot. For the long time reader of fantasy there's nothing really new here but Ms. Rawlings has excited so many young imaginations that it makes me very happy indeed! CHARLES: Are we actually related? JOE: Hello funnyman, I hope we get a chance to see you again sometime soon. JENNIFER: please check out my website for all your Vess merchandising needs. Well so long. Keep writing, it gets lonely in the studio sometimes... CHARLES VESS

hi, charles. thought you would like to know that the painting i bought from you in san diego is hanging above the fireplace in my living room. it's the piece you did to benefit the independent bookseller in virginia. of all the pieces hanging in my home, it elicits the most reaction. i noticed you are starting to sell some of your rose artwork. will more of it be up for sale? there are just a few pieces in the gallery. hope you can make it to wondercon in oakland this year. looking forward to seeing you. best, bill

Sorry about the first message... i have troubles sometimes... anyway, just writing you to tell you about my youth director and friend, Chris. He is 22 today and i am on this webpage trying to find something to get him for his birthday.... He loves your work and he loves Neil Gaiman's writings.... He started reading Stardust to us outloud one night I just want you to know that I think you are marvelously talented.... you really create a whimsical mood. We both are artists ourselves and can appreciate talent when we see it..... Anyway, keep up the good work.... now i am going to search all of Irvine for some of your works so I can make his birthday extra special. Take care... God Bless.

HELLO EVERYONE, CHARLES HERE! I've just finished packing up the 52 pieces of art that were sold over the eBay art auction to support my wife's recovery fund. WHEW, I'm tired of the smell of packing tape!! I've also just finished all three covers for the ROSE mini-series and Jeff has just sent me the first of the interior layouts. As soon as I finish typing this up I'm going to begin drawing it. We (Cartoon Books and myself) are expecting all three issues to be published this fall. I will be previewing the on-going work from time to time on my website so watch out for new stuff in the "Rose" section. GRETCHIN: Don't despair the "STARDUST" magnets are still available through my website, just check them out under "Stardust/ Merchandize". DAVE: As to "THE RAVEN BANNER" you can usually find that for sale on eBay. Just type in "Vess" and you'll find a lot of material (most of which pertains to "Vess Cola" merchandize) that is sometimes hard to find: the older graphic novels, my FPG card set, etc. MARK: Well, actually the CJ cover is titled: "Portrait of the Artist as a Young..." so you can quess who it depicts. JEFF: You, also should check out eBay. In general if you can't find my work through your local shop or my website always try them. Well, thats all for now. Best wishes to you all, Charles

Hello Charles (and staff): I am an avid fan of Spider-man and as such have come in contact with your wonderful artwork. Your association with Spider-man is what prompted me to get "Stardust", and I thouroughly enjoyed it. Thank you! Being a fan of Spider-man and in particular your work on his tiles and cover work prompted me to order two lithographs you had done featuring the Black Cat.( my wife loves cats, especially our 4). The two lithographs sat in my basement for a number of months until I found the proper frames. Once I had procured them I returned to my awaiting lithos, only to find that our cats had unceremoniously christened them.(Phew-not a nice smell or stain) Please oh, please where might I go or who could I contact about replacing the two Spider-man/Black Cat lithos? Thank you for entertaining and delighting me with your talent. I always look forward to seeing your work. Sincerely(and hopefully not too crazy sounding)-Jeff Haardt

In regards to the Dover edition of Child's Ballads: the full five volume set will run about $600 to $1000 US from most major booksellers. The single volume can run from between $75.00 to $150.00 each. Here's hoping someone republishes them uneditted.

Also, I want to throw my hat into the ring for Der Konig Erl appearing in the next ballads! Just my two cents; got change for a nickel?

HELLO EVERYONE, CHARLES HERE AND WELCOME TO THE NEW CENTURY! Things are starting to settle down around the studio, after the crush of the holiday excitement AND the big benefit art auction on ebay. Karen and I are VERY HAPPY with the results (and want to send our heartfelt thanks to all those who contributed!), it will go a long ways to paying off some of those hospitalization bills. Whew... There's going to be a bunch of new stuff up on the site as of late next week. A run down on all the work I've got coming out as well as a bunch of new paintings that won't see print for some time yet (including the covers to the new "Rose" series), so please take a browse through. TARA: You're right, all of Charles deLint's work is a good read. "Memory and Dream" is still my favorite, although "Someplace To Be Flying" is right up there with the best of 'um. DeLint has his own extensive website as well as a very interesting fan site:Tamson House. If there are any of you out there that has not read his work you might want to! DAVID: Yes, I am working on new ballads material even as we speak. A 18 page "Allison Gross" is almost finished as is "The Great Selkie" (with a beautiful script by Jane Yolen). I've some 50 to 60 pages of new material to complete and THEN I will publish all (both old and new) in one hardcover volume, hopefully with a bound in music CD of the songs. But you'll all just have to wait until they're finished for publication of the complete works... WILL: I'll check out your project soon. Have fun and I'll talk to you soon. CHARLES.

CHARLES: as a matter of fact, I've read pretty much all of Charles De Lint's work that I can get my grubby little mitts on--including his latets chapbook, which I noticed had a Vess cover :) My favourites have always been Jilly and Crow Girls stories, tho I remember really loving his _Into The Green_ many years ago as well... Not as wild about the Tamson Hosue books as I am the Newford anthologies and novels. I actually have a teeny tiny fan website that DESPERATELY needs updating, and did a sketch of Jilly that I gave as a gift to Canadian actor Don Francks (whose daughter Cree Summer is a big ole De Lint fan) back in Octover, tho the sketch is on-line as well (http://ljc.simplenet.com/echoes/jilly.jpg). Have a fantastic (and safe) New Year's EVe and Day, and much hugs to all.

Greetings of the Season and Happy 2000! WOW! Here's a quick note to update everyone on my recovery: still progressing! My body is making a series of adjustments and compensations on all levels as I mend, this being just at a year-and-a-half into it, so keep the wonderful thoughts and prayers coming. I am so grateful for you! Due to the nature and location of the injury, it seems the right side extremities will be slower in healing than the rest of the body. The cold weather really affects the muscles, plus makes it easier to stay in bed when I really have to be up and moving around. I'll keep busy by focusing on the events of the Third Annual (!) Good Goddess Arts Exhibition with Susan Lachmann, it helps to keep the mind off the physical discomforts, though can be stressful in its own right. And the Recovery Fund is benefiting from an art auction on eBay -- check it out ! Click SEARCH on the eBay navigation bar, go to seller ID, type in 'thegreenman', OR in the "What are You Looking For?" box type in comic art. Have fun! Love, Karen

I bought The Horns of Elfland over 20 years ago, so I've been a fan for a long time, but I just discovered this site yesterday. I read through the message archive, and was interested in the news about the CD that is intended to accompany the expanded Ballads collection (see Friday, June 18, 1999). Is the ballad "The Three Lovers" (or "Sweet William and Fair Eleanor") a version of Child 74, "Lady Margaret and Sweet William"? If so, I recommend the haunting performance by Shirley Collins on her 1968 LP "The Power of the True Love Knot". It is now available on CD. Also, on Friday, August 06, 1999, J. Olivier Dancoine mentioned the film "The Company of Wolves". The film was based on a story in the book The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter. I would just like to recommend that anyone interested in brilliant modern reworkings of traditional fairy tales should read this book.

Virginia is the daughter of Alan Lee (who, for those who don't know, is the illustrator of Tolkien's works, co-creator of "Faeries" with Brian Froud, etc. etc.) She has just graduated from university and is an extremely talented artist in her own right. Her work is inspired by folklore, the English landscape, and myths of transformation. You'll find it in the Gallery section of the Endicott Studio for Mythic Arts site (www.endicott-studio.com). Merry Solstice to you all, from all of us at the Endicott Studio.

Hi Charles! I just wanted to say that it was wonderful seeing you again at ConCat. I was so pleased when I heard you might show up there. I would hardly call your pool playing inept though. On the contrary, playing pool with you was one of the highlights of my weekend! I may just have to go down there again next year for a rematch. :)

HELLO EVERYBODY FROM THE VERY HARD WORKING ARTIST. Last weekend I attended a very enjoyable con in Knoxville, Tn: CONCAT. It was all very spur of the moment, due to a call from Neil (Gaiman) 4 days prior, "Say why don't you come down for a visit, it's not far from you...". So instead of flying to Minneapolis this month with the next three "Stardust" prints for the boxed set that Neil needed to sign, I packed up and drove the short 2 hrs. to K'ville. I had a great time with the "Thingies", played some inept games of pool and even had my Tarot read! Sunday was almost all work though, as Neil and I signed a little over 900 prints. So for all you print subscribers out there, there will be no more long delays between offerings. The first print (#4 in the series) will be made available this month (Dec.). Also I've finished up my 8 pages of "THE DREAMING" #47 as well as a "NUTCRACKER" poster for the local ballet. This poster along with my "READING" poster will soon be offered in signed and numbered editions through the site. Then it was back to the drawing board this week to paint a piece for a local exhibition of all 22 Major Arcana of the Tarot, each done by a seperate artist. I choose to interpret "The Lovers" card. Never fear, I'll be putting the image up on the site soon, for those of you that can't make it down to Va. for the show. And so it goes... JAN: the "Offical C. Vess Checklist" is now up in the "Merchandize" section of the site. TARA: deLint is a wonderful writer. Have you tried "Memorey and Dream" yet? It is one of my favorites. MATT: I was not involved in the production of the "Spirits of the Earth" statue in anyway, but those French lads did a tremendous job replicating my cover painting into three dimensions. I LOVE having a copy on my mantle! RODERICK: I listed several new projects by me in the above but you can also look for a VERY lengthy interview in the next Comics Journal. 7 hrs. on the phone and boy was my ear and brain tired!!! JANELL: Yes I will be the artist guest of honor at ConCat next year. Charles deLint (and his lovely wife Mary Ann Harris) will be there as the writer guest of honor and I couldn't be happier to be seeing them both. I'm out of here. CHARLES

Hi, So glad to hear and see that Karen is doing so well. I join with many others whom I am sure continue to pray for her complete recovery. The thank-you note was lovely and appreciated. I continue to enjoy as much of your work as I can find, which is most, and afford, which doesn't yet include originals except for some ltd.signed eds. Be well, happy and productive. Howie

hello, mr. vess....i am currently attempting to collect as much of your work as possible and i had a question....did you work on the casting of the spiderman: spirits of the earth statue? if not, would you consider that statue part of your work for a collector to include as a charles vess collectible? also, i'd like to throw in my vote for an account of all your works...or at least from 1996 where the book left off. thank you for all the wonderful artwork and the awesome website.... ps....my tattoos of your artwork are still a work in progress, but i will send you photos of them as soon as they are done

Wow! I haven't been here in a while, and I really love the new layout! I too have been looking for a copy of Child's Ballads, and in fact ended up in a very long email correspondance one day with a certain colourist at a certain press what publishes nifty peachy keen stuff like comcis and prints and goodies that ahs a neat-o message board, and said bloke was going to try adn find me a copy but then I fell off the face of the earth *lol* Maybe I should email him again, eh? Wish you folk all the best, and I'll try and pop back in mroe often from now on! I seem to be up to my eyeballs in Charles de Lint mail froma listserv at the moment, actually, and am meant to be re-reading Little COuntry so I can actually add to the discussion, but haven't had a spare minute to read in a few weeks (and, erm... the last five books I read were all Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan pulp novels. Quite a switch from my usual fare, tho not too much, actually... If you ignroe the fact that the books are highly improbable, occasionally incredibly offensive, all the women are Victorian and silly, they really are deliciously entertaining in a Klingon kind of way!)

Hello Charles. A few words from a danish fan. I am looking forward to the "Rose" mini-series. The preview in Trilogy Tour II looked great. I have a request - Why donīt You make the "Official Charles Vess Check-list" accessible on the Green Man Site ? It would be a great help for fans of Your work. I live in Denmark, and the only work published in danish is the "Wendigo-story" from Amazing Spiderman 277 (and a few Marvel-covers). But hey! I like like the original work also. (Oh well, I love it.). Is "Skade" coming as a graphic novel and are there plans for further "Book of Ballads and Sagas" ? The stories from EPIC Illustrated are they in the "Book of Night" TPB. from Dark Horse ? Yes, You could avoid all these questions with a online check-list. Best of luck. Jan Bentzen - Denmark

HELLO THERE EVERYONE, CHARLES HERE, as usual things are hopping here at Green Man Press. I'm getting ready to attend The World Fantasy Convention, held this year in Providence, RI. In attendance will be friends as well as fellow ballad collaboraters (both past and future) Charles deLint (and his lovely wife Mary Ann Harris), Delia Sherman, Ellen Kushner, and Terri Windling as well as fellow artists Brian and Wendy Froud. It should be fun to just hang out and relax with these folks. Workwise, I'm finishing up an 8 page segment of 'The Dreaming'(issue #47), full of Goblins, Dwarves and evil Faeries. One drawing to a page, much like the gypsie folk tale in 'Sandman'#62. The three cover paintings for the 'Rose' mini series are also on my drawing board as is a poster for a local production of 'The Nutcraker'. As to your guestions: MICHAEL, please say hello to Diane for me and tell her that I really look forward to seeing her around Christmas time. PAT, do you have access to the lyrics to 'Der Erlkoening' it sounds very interesting...I would hate to affect, in any way, the lovely ambiguity that the lyrics to 'John Barleycorn' possess, so I wouldn't want to make any one interpretation concrete by 'drawing' it all in for the reader, but I would love to do a single illustration one day. CHARLOTTE, there was a mid-sixties trade paperback reprint edition of the Child Ballads by Dover Press. It is difficult to come by but not as expensive as other editions. Yes, I agree, there does need to be a new edition of this important collection. I have to go to my local library that does have a complete collection to do my research and sometimes it gets a bit frustrating that way! But they DO have a copy and for that I'm very grateful. STEVE,the Spindale station is great, when I can get their signal, which only seems to be in certain geographocal locations in my car, never at my studio or home. WMMT out of Whitesburg Kn. is also great with the same listening restrictions. Those lovely mountains do get in the way. JACK, 'The Adventures of Hero Bear' can be ordered through Diamond Distr. or directly through it's publisher:Astonish Comics at astonishco@aol,com. Everyone should grab themselves a copy befor they fly off the shelves, it's a really fun read and beautifuly drawn. Thats it for now, talk to you later...CHARLES.

Hellos, Brilliant work all around, Charles! Here's a quick question for all of you: Has anyone any idea if any publishing company is intending on reprinting the original Child Ballads? The last printing was in the 50s, and you'd be lucky to find copies in rare book shops. Although waiting for the next Steeleye Span album to come out is one way to aquaint one's self with these tales, it just seems much more fullfilling to get the whole whack of them all at once, in the original form. :) (here's the bit where I slimily get promotion in: ;) I've started an online resource for participants/dabblers of the fantasy genre. It's not just for writers, but artists, preformers, dreamers, and whosoever has ever wanted to live a little bit just that side of the mundane. :) Come take a look, and add your two cents... etc, charlotte

I like Ballades & Sagas quite a bit, but there is one ballade that I think would be perfect and essentail for the format but doesn't seem to have been tackled yet, at least not in the issues I've got. Namely Goethe's "Der Erlkoenig." I'd really love to see what Charles would do with that classic. Also something I think would be fun to see would be "John Barleycorn." A traditional version, of course, would be ideal. It would be a bit of a departure from the usual format of Ballades & Sagas I guess, but it would be fun. I hope I'm not way behind the times and these have already come out, that would be embarrassing! Thanks for reading...

Charles, Out for Thai food with old friend last month, and she asked, out of the blue, "Do you still read those crazy comics? Well, one of my friends does that sort of thing, his work is really cool, but I don't suppose you'll have heard of him? His name is Charlie Vess..." Nearly spit out my Dim Sum. I've known Diane Atkinson for about 8 years now, and this is the first time she mentioned you. Had the devil of a time convincing her that you were as a God who walks amongst us... She probably thought I was just being polite. anyways, thank you for Stardust, and I look forward to whatever comes along next. Regards, Michael

This is just a short "thank you". I met you a couple of years ago in Wheaton, MD and your ease at speaking to fans and your candor struck me. But I was most taken by the fact that an artist like you, who can have his pick of work from the "majors" takes the time to do a book that has personal meaning. It gives me the drive to work my way and not sell out to a house style. I may never get my work published, but I'm proud to say that every word, page, panel and line are mine. Thank you sir .

HELLO THERE FOLKS, I'm finally back from numerous trips and ready to start talking back at you. I thought I'd fill you in on what's been happening. SAN DIEGO was splendid (as usual). It was a bit sad not to be able to look back over my shoulder and be reassured by the huge presence of the Trilogy Tree but it WAS nice not having to deal with the union folks or all the shipping and unpacking involved in our giant display. I discovered a great new comic: 'HERO BEAR'. It's self published by a young man who also works for the Disney animation dept. Funny. Insightful. And Beautifully drawn. Go out and try to find a copy today! Meanwhile back at my booth the crowds were long, the sales brisk, and the conversations lively. I even got to sign a few copies of 'THE BIG BOOK OF GRIMM' from Paradox press that has my 5 page 'SNOW WHITE' adaptation in it. The whole project is pretty swell so go take a look at it yourself. I enjoyed myself quite a bit and as always will be returning next year. THEN it was back to my studio and the drawing board as I banged out my 8 pgs. in 'PROMETHEA' #4 as well as 7 full color pages for the childrens book publisher Klutz Press. My pages are about how some of the constellations got their names via Greek Mythology. I hadn't returned to the world of Greek and Roman Mythology since grade school and the discovery of the Vikings and the Celtic tales, so it was a real pleasure rediscovering all those wonderful tales. The book will be out in Jan. 2000 and is called 'BEDROOM ASTRONOMY'. THEN it was off to northern Spain for a comics conference in the small town of Aviles. The conference had invited about 20 writer/artists from the US, UK, Europe and their homeland to hangout, do sketches, and talk about comics. The whole thing is sponsored by the city goverment in support of the town's cultural well being. A wonderful outlook on the arts, one that I wish was more prevelant in our country!!! Anyway as a side trip a group of us hiked into the back country, up a formidable hillside, along an ancient cattle track in search of 'THE MIGHTY DOLMEN'. "It's not far," they said. Hours later our intrepid crew (Carlos, Roberto, Ron Garney, Alex Ross, Jeff Smith, Andreais and myself), panting for breath reached a sub peak of the mountain wherein 'THE MIGHTY DOLMEN' sat in all of its 2 1/2 foot splendor. The picnic table of the gods so to speak. Not quite the mystical epiphany we had all hoped for. But the mountains stretched away from us in all directions. Rocky outcrops jutting into the blue sky. The world seemed very far away. And it was enough for me, at least. The way down was easier and many hilarious drawings were done late into the evening. BEFORE I returned home I made a trip to Barcelona for a store signing. Art Museums everywhere you walked and the striking architecture of Antonio Gaudi was eye splitting in it's grandeur. NOW, back in my studio, I'm preparing for a massive interview in the COMICS JOURNAL as well as a trip to the WORLD FANTASY AWARDS ( I'm up for artist of the year, along with some other very formidible names) in Providence RI. ALSO I'm off to a convention in Austin Tx. in mid-Oct. along with other guests: William Stout, Bernie Wrightson, Marc Schultz, Dave Stevens and Gary Gianni. It should be fun. I hope to see some of you there. CHARLES.
